Food Safety Requirements for Publix Suppliers

Publix's food safety program requires suppliers to follow GFSI-recognized food safety standards (SQF, BRC, or equivalent). These standards, combined with FSMA Sanitary Transportation, impose specific pallet-related requirements on suppliers:

• Pallet supplier qualification. Your pallet supplier should be on your approved supplier list with documentation on file. Florida Pallet Supply provides supplier qualification questionnaire responses for Publix supplier audit files.
• No chemical-use pallets. Pallets sourced for Publix shipments must have prior-use history appropriate for food contact - not chemical, pesticide, or industrial applications. Florida Pallet Supply's Grade A GMA pallets are sourced from food and consumer goods supply chains.
• Dry pallets for refrigerated and produce loads. Publix receives significant refrigerated and produce volume. Wet pallets introduce microbial risk in cold chain environments. All pallet deliveries should arrive dry.
• Pallet inspection procedure on file. Publix supplier auditors may ask for your pallet receiving inspection SOP. A simple written procedure describing how you inspect pallets on arrival meets this requirement.

Publix GreenWise & Organic Supplier Requirements

Publix's GreenWise and organic private label suppliers face additional restrictions. USDA National Organic Program (NOP) regulations prohibit the use of methyl bromide fumigated pallets in organic supply chains. For GreenWise and organic Publix vendors:

• Use only heat-treated (HT) or untreated pallets. Never use MB-stamped pallets.
• New pallets are strongly preferred for direct-contact organic produce applications.
• Plastic pallets eliminate wood-pallet contamination risk entirely and are ideal for organic produce DCs.
