Wood vs plastic comparison, FSMA/BRC/SQF compliance, deep-freeze ratings, and sourcing for cold storage facilities across FL, GA, NJ, MD, and DE.
Cold chain logistics -- frozen food, fresh produce, pharmaceuticals, and dairy -- place unique stresses on pallets. Temperature cycling between -20°F and +70°F causes wood to expand, contract, and eventually crack. Condensation promotes mold. And food safety regulations make contamination tolerance zero. Choosing the right pallet type for cold chain can prevent product loss, inspection failures, and pallet collapse mid-load.

Wood pallets degrade faster in cold storage for four reasons:
| Specification | Nestable Plastic | Rackable Plastic |
|---|---|---|
| Dynamic Load Capacity | 2,000 - 2,500 lbs | 2,500 - 4,000 lbs |
| Static Load Capacity | 20,000 - 25,000 lbs | 25,000 - 35,000 lbs |
| Rack Compatible | No (floor storage only) | Yes (beam rack rated) |
| Forklift Entry | 2-way | 4-way |
| Sanitation | Pressure wash, chemical sanitize | Pressure wash, chemical sanitize |
| Weight | 25 - 35 lbs | 45 - 65 lbs |
| Cold Storage Lifespan | 5-8 years | 8-12 years |
We regularly supply pallets to cold storage and temperature-controlled distribution centers across our five-state territory:

| Georgia | Atlanta (largest cold storage hub in Southeast), Savannah (produce port) |
| New Jersey | Elizabeth, Secaucus, Linden (pharmaceutical cold chain, frozen food) |
| Maryland | Baltimore, Jessup (pharma cold chain, grocery DCs) |
| Delaware | Wilmington (fresh fruit port), New Castle (pharma) |
Rackable plastic pallets (HDPE or polypropylene) are the best choice for deep-freeze environments below -10 degrees F. They tolerate temperatures down to -40 degrees F, do not absorb moisture, and maintain structural integrity through thousands of freeze-thaw cycles. They are more expensive upfront ($80-120 each) but last 8-12 years in cold storage versus 1-3 years for wood pallets in the same environment.
Recycled wood pallets can be used in refrigerated (above 32 degrees F) environments with proper inspection. Grade A recycled pallets in good condition are acceptable in many FDA and FSMA-regulated facilities, provided they pass a contamination inspection and are kept dry. Facilities with BRC or SQF certification may require new pallets or documented Grade A stock with supplier verification. Deep freeze (-10 degrees F and below) is not recommended for wood.
Switching from wood to plastic pallets can simplify your FSMA Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls (HARPC) plan by eliminating wood splinter hazards and reducing the pallet contamination pathway. Plastic pallets still require cleaning verification -- pressure wash and sanitize between uses in contact zones. Document the changeover in your HARPC and update your pallet inspection SOP.
Yes. We stock nestable and rackable plastic pallets in standard GMA 48x40 footprint for delivery across FL, GA, NJ, MD, and DE. Quantities available vary -- contact us for current stock levels and lead time. We recommend ordering plastic pallets on a net-new basis rather than recycled since documented sanitation history is often required for food and pharma applications.
Request: (1) A letter of conformance stating pallet grade, species, and treatment type, (2) documentation that pallets are free of chemical treatment other than kiln-drying (for food applications), (3) ISPM-15 treatment certificates if pallets will be used for international export, and (4) inspection records showing the pallets were visually inspected before delivery. We provide all of these for qualified cold chain customers on request.
Response within 2 business hours. No obligation.
