The GMA Pallet Standard
48x40 Specs, Capacity & Why It Dominates US Distribution

Florida Pallet Supply • Updated 2026-03-30

The GMA pallet - named after the Grocery Manufacturers Association - is the de facto standard pallet in the United States. Walk into virtually any US distribution center, grocery warehouse, or food manufacturing facility and you will find 48x40 GMA pallets stacked floor to ceiling. Understanding this standard is essential for any purchasing manager, warehouse operator, or logistics professional in the US supply chain.

This guide covers everything: the exact GMA spec, why it became dominant, its load capacities, common variants, and how to source GMA-compliant pallets efficiently.

Why 48x40 Became the US Standard

The 48x40 dimension was not arbitrarily chosen - it was engineered to maximize trailer utilization. A standard 53-foot dry van trailer is 98-99 inches wide inside. Two 48-inch pallets placed side by side with their 48-inch dimension across the trailer width fit perfectly (96 inches). Running the 40-inch dimension lengthwise allows 26 pallet rows in a 53-foot trailer (26 x 40" = 1,040" = 86.6 feet of pallet run, with room for wall padding). This maximizes cubic utilization while keeping loads manageable.

GMA Grade Classifications

New GMA pallets are manufactured to the full spec. Recycled GMA pallets are graded on condition: Grade A (premium recycled, near-new quality, no broken boards, all notches intact), Grade B (functional recycled, minor repairs acceptable, suitable for most applications), and Grade C (broken deck boards, repaired stringers, suitable for non-racking applications or one-way shipping only). For food and beverage applications, Grade A or new pallets are typically required.

GMA vs European Pallet (EUR/EPAL)

The European standard pallet (EUR 1200x800mm = 47.2" x 31.5") is smaller than the GMA 48x40 and uses block construction. These two standards are not interchangeable in racking systems designed for one or the other. If you are exporting to Europe or working with European supply chain partners, confirm which pallet standard your customer requires before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

A standard 53-foot dry van trailer holds 26 GMA (48x40) pallets per row, single-stacked. With double-stacking (where load height allows), you can fit 52 pallets. Floor-loaded trailers can carry significantly more.
Southern yellow pine is the most common species in Florida and the Southeast due to regional availability. Oak, mixed hardwood, and recycled mixed-species boards are also common. Species affects weight and durability.
Yes. GMA stringer pallets can be heat treated to ISPM-15 standards and marked with the HT stamp. This is required for wood pallet exports to most countries. Florida Pallet Supply offers ISPM-15 compliant heat-treated GMA pallets.
Not necessarily. GMA specifies construction details beyond just dimensions - stringer count, deck board count, notch specification, and load ratings. A 48x40 block pallet or a 48x40 export pallet is not a GMA pallet even though the footprint matches.
