Open a CHEP account at chep.com. You will need your Walmart supplier number and target DC list. CHEP will set up depot locations near your facility for pallet pickup. Account setup typically takes 2-5 business days for approved suppliers.
CHEP pallets are retrieved from Walmart DCs by CHEP directly -- you are not responsible for pallet return from Walmart. You are responsible for returning empty CHEP pallets from your facility to CHEP depots if pallets come back to your location. Failure to return pallets results in lost pallet fees ($21-28 per pallet).
CHEP invoices include issue fees, transfer fees, and lost pallet fees. Reconcile CHEP invoices monthly against your shipment records. Disputes about lost pallets must be filed within 90 days. Keep BOL copies and DC delivery confirmation records for every CHEP shipment.
If your Walmart volume is below the CHEP program minimum or if you ship only to Walmart DCs that accept owned pallets, owned Grade A GMA pallets at $9-15 each can be significantly cheaper than CHEP. When in doubt, using CHEP is always safe -- using owned pallets at a CHEP-mandatory DC will result in a chargeback.
Walmart requires GFSI-recognized certification for fresh food suppliers. The most common certifications accepted by Walmart are SQF (Safe Quality Food) Edition 9, BRC (British Retail Consortium) Global Standard Issue 9, and FSSC 22000. Walmart's supplier portal specifies the required certification level by product category -- fresh produce typically requires Level 2 or Level 3 SQF certification. GFSI certification audits pallet handling as part of the FSMA Sanitary Transportation assessment.
USDA National Organic Program (NOP) prohibits the use of methyl bromide (MB) treated pallets for certified organic product.
