Pallet Grading System - Grade A, B, C & Premium

Not all recycled pallets are equal. Florida Pallet Supply explains the industry grading system so you can buy the right quality level for your application and budget every time.

Grade Reference Table

Pallet Grades Compared

The pallet grading system classifies recycled pallets by condition, structural integrity, and repair level. Here is how each grade is defined and what it means for your operation.

GradeConditionBoard IntegrityRepair LevelTypical Use
Premium / NewPerfect - no prior use100% - all boards intact, no damageNone - built from new lumberPharma, food-contact, export, retail compliance
Grade A (1A)Good - minor cosmetic wearAll boards structurally sound, minor blemishes OKMinor repairs acceptableGrocery distribution, general manufacturing, 3PL
Grade B (1B)Fair - visible wear, some repairsBoards functional but visible damage or replacementMultiple repairs, companion boards commonInternal warehouse use, non-food industrial, staging
Grade C / EconomyPoor - heavy wear, significant repairsStructurally marginal - use with reduced loads onlyExtensive repairs, mixed wood speciesOne-way shipments, temporary staging, disposal candidates

Florida Pallet Supply grades all recycled pallets before sale. We stock Grade A, Grade B, and new Premium pallets for delivery across FL, GA, NJ, MD, and DE.

Pallet grading is not a fully standardized system enforced by a single governing body - different suppliers may apply slightly different criteria to the same grade designations. At Florida Pallet Supply, we apply consistent, documented inspection criteria to every recycled pallet before grading and sale. This means when you order Grade A pallets from us, you get Grade A pallets - not a mixed bag of ungraded recycled material. The National Wooden Pallet and Container Association publishes guidance on pallet quality standards that informs our grading process. Grade Definitions in Detail

What Each Pallet Grade Really Means

Understanding what inspectors actually look for at each grade level helps you set the right expectations when ordering recycled pallets.

Premium / New: Built from fresh-cut, kiln-dried lumber to exact specification. Every deck board is full-width, every stringer is complete, and there are no repairs, cosmetic blemishes, or unknown product history. New pallets are the only grade appropriate for direct food contact and pharmaceutical manufacturing environments. Florida Pallet Supply builds new pallets from Southern Yellow Pine and mixed hardwood to GMA and custom specifications.

Grade A (also called 1A): A Grade A pallet has been inspected and all structural components are sound. Minor cosmetic issues are acceptable - slight discoloration, minor surface checking, evidence of previous use - but all boards are present and intact, and no board is broken, severely split, or missing. Repairs are minimal and use the same or equivalent lumber as the original. Grade A pallets deliver 90-95% of new pallet load capacity and are appropriate for the vast majority of commercial distribution and warehousing applications.

Grade B (also called 1B): Grade B pallets show more significant wear and may have had multiple boards replaced. Companion boards (boards nailed alongside damaged stringers to restore structural integrity) are common on Grade B pallets. All repairs must be functional, but the pallet will show visible signs of prior use and repair. Grade B pallets are best suited for internal warehouse use, non-food industrial staging, and applications where pallet condition is not visible or critical.

Grade C / Economy: Grade C pallets have extensive repairs, mixed wood species, and may be approaching the end of their useful life. They are appropriate only for very light loads, one-way shipments, or temporary staging. Florida Pallet Supply does not recommend Grade C pallets for any application where load safety is critical. These pallets should not be used in rack systems or for heavy dynamic loads.

Key Industries

Grade Selection by Industry

🍎

Food Distribution

Food distribution operations typically use Grade A recycled pallets for finished goods distribution and Grade A or new pallets for production-adjacent applications. The unknown product history of Grade B and below makes them unsuitable for food-safe environments. Florida Pallet Supply supplies food distributors across FL, GA, NJ, MD, and DE with Grade A recycled and new pallets graded to consistent standards.

💊

Pharmaceutical

Pharmaceutical operations under GMP or GDP requirements generally specify new (Premium) pallets for all production and primary distribution environments. Some secondary distribution operations accept Grade A recycled pallets with documented supplier quality programs. Florida Pallet Supply can provide quality documentation and supplier certification letters for pharmaceutical customers with vendor qualification requirements.

General Warehouse

General warehousing and 3PL operations handling non-food, non-regulated products can typically use Grade A recycled pallets for all applications and Grade B for internal staging and light-load storage. Florida Pallet Supply helps general warehouse customers across all five states optimize their pallet grade mix to minimize cost without compromising safety or performance.

FAQ

Pallet Grading FAQ

Is pallet grading standardized across the industry?

Pallet grading terminology (Grade A, Grade B, etc.) is widely used but not enforced by a single universal standard. Different suppliers may apply different criteria to the same grade designations. This is why buying from a supplier with a documented, consistent grading process - like Florida Pallet Supply - matters. Always ask your supplier what specific inspection criteria define each grade before placing a large order based on grade alone.

Can I mix Grade A and Grade B pallets in my warehouse?

Yes, many operations use a mix of grades for different purposes. Grade A pallets handle outbound shipments and rack storage while Grade B pallets handle internal staging and floor storage of lighter goods. The key is having a clear system that ensures Grade B pallets are not accidentally used in applications requiring Grade A performance. Florida Pallet Supply can advise on mixed-grade pallet programs for operations in FL, GA, NJ, MD, and DE.

How do I know if a pallet I receive is really Grade A?

Inspect each unit when received. A Grade A pallet should have all boards present and structurally intact, no broken stringers, minimal repairs with structurally sound companion boards if any, and no severe checking, splitting, or missing nail areas. If you consistently receive pallets that do not meet Grade A standards, that is a supplier quality issue. Florida Pallet Supply welcomes inspection of our grading facility and backs our grades with documented inspection processes.

What is a companion board and does it mean a pallet is lower quality?

A companion board is a board nailed alongside a damaged or cracked stringer to restore its structural load-carrying capacity. A properly applied companion board using sound lumber can restore a stringer pallet to Grade A functional performance. The presence of a single companion board does not automatically downgrade a pallet if the repair is sound and the rest of the pallet is in good condition. Multiple companion boards or companion boards on degraded wood indicate more extensive prior damage, pushing the pallet toward Grade B.

Does Florida Pallet Supply offer pallet grading documentation?

Yes. Florida Pallet Supply can provide grade certification letters and supplier qualification documentation for customers with vendor qualification programs - including those in pharmaceutical, food manufacturing, and other regulated industries. Contact our team to discuss your specific documentation requirements and how we can support your supplier qualification process.
