Publix accepts recycled Grade A clean-face pallets (unlike Walmart/Target requiring new GMA) - a major sustainability + cost advantage for suppliers serving Publix. Publix pallet spec requirements
- Pallet type: Recycled Grade A (clean-face standard) - Publix is one of the few major retailers that accepts recycled at scale. New GMA also accepted. Grade B recycled and GMA whites NOT accepted.
- Clean-face standard: no debris on top or bottom deck, no protruding nails or fasteners, board thickness consistent for hand-truck + power-jack + conveyor handling. Failed inspection = load rejection at DC receiving.
- Dimensions: 48x40 GMA standard. Non-standard sizes accepted only with pre-approval + specific PO reference.
- Load rating: 2,500 lb static minimum. Heavy-item DCs may require 3,000+ lb static.
- USDA-inspection compatibility: for meat + poultry + seafood receiving, pallets must not have chemical treatment other than heat. No fumigants, no antimicrobials, no non-heat treatment allowed.
- FSMA 204 traceability: effective January 2026 for FTL foods (leafy greens, fresh + shell eggs, cheeses, cucumbers, herbs, melons, peppers, sprouts, tomatoes, tropical tree fruits, deli salads, seafood). Pallet-level lot code + GS1 US barcode support required.
Publix delivery + OTIF requirements
Publix vendor portal manages delivery appointments across all 9 DCs. Suppliers must:
- Schedule delivery through Publix vendor portal 24-72 hours before receiving.
- Meet 95%+ OTIF (On-Time In-Full) target. Below-target OTIF triggers chargeback + supplier scorecard downgrade.
- Cold-chain temperature mapping documented for refrigerated + frozen loads.
- Full BOL + pallet count + lot documentation at receiving.
- Standing weekly suppliers get dedicated Publix appointment slots aligned to production cadence.
Publix supplier program tiers
Category A (national brands + high-volume private label): weekly delivery appointment, standing PO, direct relationship with Publix category buyer. Requires 500+ pallets/week for at least 12+ months of history. Full FSMA 204 + HACCP + cGMP compliance for applicable categories.
Category B (regional + specialty brands): bi-weekly delivery appointment, PO-per-shipment, distributor-relationship typical. Lower volume threshold (100+ pallets/week).
Category C (specialty + emerging brands): monthly delivery appointment, PO-per-shipment, distributor relationship required. Volume threshold varies.
